I’ve been taking a few of the classes on svslearn.com, mostly around characters and children’s book illustration. I’d love to eventually get to that stage where I could illustrate something like Carson Ellis, or Shaun Tan, but need to do a lot more work in visual storytelling.
For this, I was trying to loosen up a bit with people and characters, turning a reference portrait into a more simplified shape. The fine art brain in me finds this pretty hard as I’m so used to trying to get things just right.
I think I’ve discovered I have a ‘natural’ way that I draw faces, that I’m happy with, now need to work on the settings and backgrounds, and the story.
Practice, practice
